Sketch introduced nested symbols in 2016 and it changed the interface design workflow, in my opinion, Learning this new workflow will greatly improve your design consistency and speed. Nested symbols allow you to create a master version of a component and then make as many instances of it as you want

To create a nested Symbol, just drag an existing instance into another Symbol’s master. It’s that simple! Any updates you make to the Symbol’s master will see the changes propagate throughout your design no matter if they’re inside another Symbol or not. As well as dragging an existing instance into a master, and inserting via the toolbar item, you can also select multiple instances of different Symbols and press Create Symbol in the toolbar.

There’s no limit to how deep you can nest Symbols, but please note a Symbol cannot contain an instance of itself.

  1. Hey Jesse, awesome video! I'm using version 55.2, and I wanted to point out a small difference that might be helpful for other viewers. At the 22:50 mark, I needed to select each symbol, and then pick "Pin to Edge" (for the appropriate edge). Then click both lines of "Fix Size" under the Resizing menu. Hope this helps! 🙂

  2. Thanks for the tutorial Jesse. I'm curious if you know of a way in which I can adjust the size of a rectangle inside a symbol? I'm making a progress bar and I want to adjust the amount of progress so I want to either make the bar longer or shorter depending on how much progress has been made in the section. I've been trying to figure this out for a couple of hours but I've noticed that shapes aren't dynamic like text in Sketch.

Here's what I've tried so far, creating a rectangle as a symbol, nesting it under another symbol and then trying to adjust the width. The only way that I can adjust the width is if the rectangle isn't nested under any other symbol, however, I need it to be. Do you think there's a possible solution for this? I know you're busy but any feedback is appreciated!
