  2. I have great respect for you because you're brilliant, but in this case I respectfully disagree.

    I know, I know, I get it. Be "just" faster than everyone else. But in my opinion, pertaining to user experience (I mean, people is who this is all for correct?), the lowest barrier to "competitive" dominance simply isn't good enough.

    A visitor will put up with a site's pagespeed just long enough to either get what they want within their typically tiny time frame of patience, or mutter the words "f**k this" and move on to a competitor.

    BUT… it's not as though if the second or third one is slow also – even if slower than the first site – they're going to go back to the first one because it was a bit faster. No. They're simply going to stick with the one they're on at the time, despite being completely frustrated, and roll with it. Annnd the first choice lost the business… even if their pagespeed was "just" faster than everyone else's.

    Additionally, the pagespeed of a competitor may change at any time if they wish to gain a competitive edge. Who wants competitive pagespeed auditing to be added to their daily to-do list?

    To me, be fast… in fact dominant… thus eliminating pagespeed as a competitive threat to begin with in addition to it being a potential conversion killer. After all, a pagespeed of 5.7 seconds is said to result in a CR of less than 0.6%.

    On a side note: A case study involving Walmart showed that for every 1 second improvement in pagespeed there was a 2% conversion increase, for every 100ms increase in pagespeed there was a conversion increase of 1%, and an over all reduction in bounces.

    And the latter encapsulates what truly matters… how optimizations can positively impact a business' bottom line.
