You do not need that shape for the plane to work. It's more efficient, but not necessary for lift.
Planes use a lot less fuel now.
that's inaccurate, it increased foot concorde, then they stopped making it.
Well. I'd have mentioned the Concord personally.
Easy. Get rid of air! Now airplanes can fly fast—uh wait. Airplanes… AIRplanes. 😓
I feel like there is no wisdom is “probably not” scenarios, especially with something that could potentially be improved with new discoveries in technology and/or aviation
I think he went on a flight with the window open judging from his hair.
*it did increase for a time for the wealthy, but then the plane they flew in was retired due to noise and safety issues
Much more efficient
Hear me out, magnetic propulsion
I believe commercial planes are on average flighing slower then they used to, because companys realised, that speed isnt as big of a concern for passengers as price is. And i could Imagine that longer flights might also sell more higher class tickets, as you care more about the Quality of your time if you have to endure it for longer.
At this point, just launch us on ICBMs
I mean the concord did pretty well. But it was as you said, pretty expencive to run.
erm….Concorde
I thought it had to do with how we don't want planes above us creating loud sonic booms all the time breaking our glass and stuff.
Is the sound barrier different on Mars? Because of the thinner atmosphere?
You say it's not gonna get any faster bit I disagree
The problem you posed is ofc a very big one, but I imagine reworked designs would get around it in a reasonable price
I just don't think we hit the limit yet
You could travel by plane much faster if you could reduce the check in time and "hanging about in the airport" time
United airlines app said that we were flying at 742 mph in 2018
Man, lazy developers not updating the physics for 60 years, smh my head.
Why not just fly high enough in the atmosphere where resistance has a lower impact?
Sometimes physics don't change over decades, sometimes centuries even
Oh well I guess that i should accept that flying to the opposite side of the world would take 8/12h
Planes have also gotten quieter since the 80s and 90s, no joke
60 years a mile
i'm a jet engineer, my job is such a drag!
Look up "Shockwave mitigation by air plasma deflector". Scientists tested a model nosecone generating a high voltage plasma discharge in a wind tunnel and showed how the plasma increased the local speed of sound to above Mach 2. The higher the voltage, the more blunt the Mach cone became until it was completely eliminated.
All aerodynamic explanations aside, commercial aircraft fly at a speed that maximizes fuel economy. They are, after all, in business….
they stopped at the sound barrier due to noise not cast as rich people will still pay for the flight. but the sonic boom is so loud that it caused supersonic commercial airlines to be banned
Trains are superior.
Hank can you talk about your book bookshelves 📚
There used to be a ban on planes going past the speed of sound. This was just recently removed or something for the new supersonic airplanes from the Middle East
I still remember watching concorde retired in live tv…
I thought they just made a new airfoil shape?
