I'm always against stored procedures since from experience it's hard to debug. Also, when your DB has lots of read & write, I think it's better to offload the business logic to the app server.
Do you have a favorite PHP book? Does your book cover PHP? I've done your web courses (html, css, JavaScript). I recently finished reading head first JavaScript and worked through the examples. I'm ready to tackle PHP.

What do you think about using something like RDS or Aurora rather than a standard database (e.g. mysql) on your own webserver?
Yeah and another thing is that databases dont scale horizontally as easily like servers can, due to their history and nature of dbs. Its amazing what good normalization and as you correctly mentioned SP's and what they can do for performance. You could have a crappy webserver and code, but if you just spin 20 up and stick a reverse proxy in front of it round robin, it becomes irrelevant, but that db will always be a bottleneck.
