In this video, Mahalo’s Photoshop expert Justin Zagri shows how to add a title to a movie poster.
Photoshop Tutorial – Poster Title

One of the most important aspects of a movie poster is the title. Obviously, the title tells the audience the name of the movie, but what’s important is how the title is designed. It can convey an emotional response, tell you the genre of the film and even reveal what kind of budget the film was made with.
For this movie poster, a title with a futuristic text design and a color scheme that matches the poster, along with a few subtle effects to add to the concepts of the movie, is sought after.
You’ll want to begin by looking at the size of the image so you can create text that will fit well. Navigate to the top menu bar and click Image — Image Size.
This will show you the width and height of your poster image.
Press Ctrl/Command+N to create a new image. Rename this new image Title. Make sure the width and height are the same as the original. In this case, the width is 4050 pixels and the height is 1200 pixels. Also, make sure the Resolution is the same as the original poster.
Now, create a new layer and rename the bottom, original layer Black Reference. This will make it so you can actually see what you’re doing when you type in your titling.
Grab the Paint Bucket Tool, make sure the Foreground color is black and fill in the canvas.
Rename the second layer First Title.
Grab the Text Tool, choose an appropriate font and create a text box over the black canvas. Before you begin typing, make sure the Foreground color is white.
Click Fx at the bottom of the Layers panel and choose Bevel and Emboss.
This is going to add some inner depth to the font. In this case, the Style is set to Inner Bevel, the Technique is set to Smooth, the Direction is Up, Depth is 100% and the Size is set to 10 pixels.
Press Gradient Overlay in the tab on the left side. Set the Style to Diamond with the Angle at 0 and the Gradient white to black with the Reverse box checked.
Now, Duplicate this layer by pressing Ctrl/Command+J. Double-click on Effects.
Change the Style to Outer Bevel, add an Inner Shadow, turn off Gradient Overlay and add Stroke.
Set the Position to Center, Blend Mode Normal and the Size at 6 pixels. Press OK.
Set the Fill of this new layer to 0. You would adjust this in the top of the Layers panel just below Opacity.
Add a new layer and rename it Yellow.
Ctrl/Command+click on the bottom two layers’ thumbnails (specifically the thumbnails). Navigate to the top menu bar and click Select — Modify — Expand.
Expand it by 3 pixels.
Grab the Paint Bucket Tool, change the Foreground color to neon yellow (#fffc00) and fill in the font.
Set the Blend Mode in the Layers panel to Soft Light. Set the Opacity of the layer to 35%.
Create another new layer and rename it Texture. De-select the text.
Fill it with a different color, such as brown.
Fill the entire canvas with this color.Navigate to the top menu bar and click Filter — Noise — Add Noise. Change the settings to whatever you like and press OK.
Click Filter — Blur — Motion Blur. This will create a slight stainless steel look.
Now, click Filter — Sharpen — Unsharp Mask. This will add a little more grit and detail.
Ctrl/Command+click on the Yellow layer to make a selection. Click Add layer mask at the bottom of the Layers panel. This will fill in the font. Set the Blend Mode of this layer to Overlay.
Finally, drag the text over to the movie poster canvas.
