[Tin tức] Web Designer Salaries: Agency vs Company vs Freelance

Exploring the earning potential for different kinds of web designers. From agency web designers, to those that work at tech startups to freelance web designers.

I quite enjoyed answering this because I’ve been in all three positions: I’ve worked at an agency, then moved onto the startup scene and then finally took the plunge into full-time freelancing. I’ve come to find out that there are trade-offs for each.

Your personality-type will be largely responsible for determining which scenario is best for you. For example: If you’re the kind of person that wants something safe while working on a sidehustle then maybe working at an agency or company is best.

Don’t overthink it, try each scenario if you get the chance, as that’s the best way of determining what’s best for you. Once you do find what’s best for you, it’s smooth sailing form there.

  1. Thing about me is, I want a boring, low stress job. That’s why I’ve ditched working in these hip ‘fast paced’ agencies where you have to wear a million hats and get paid one salary.

Now I work in house for a SaaS company. Specialised role, a singular focus, no longer spread out thin and dealing with annoying clients.

Yes it’s what most others find boring, but for me I can perform better, and be less stressed!

  2. Helpful video. I’ll get my degree in design and informatics in a couple of weeks. I’ve worked on different projects while studying and always find it hard to answer when clients ask how much money my service will cost.
But I’ll probably do what you did and start in a team after my exam.

  3. Traditional jobs seem to be appealing because it’s guaranteed pay from day one. Not usually big pay but it seems risk free.

Freelancing has no guarantee and you probably won’t make a lot early on. But your ceiling is WAY higher. Ran is spot on saying you are the “master of your own destiny”.

I am a big believer is going freelance if you are willing to put in the work. For me, the traditional job now seems like the risky option.

    Thanks Ran

  4. Super helpful and insightful content, as ever sir! Thanks so much 👍 I'm currently in the position of working nearly full time for a design agency, and also running my own freelance brand identity side hustle. Would love to be making the soft of income you're talking about here, but it feels like a world away from where I'm at!

  5. Really cool to hear these options together like this! I started as freelance then moved to a company. I’m good at wearing the other hats of freelance and I loved making my own schedule but got sooo annoyed working with clients directly. I had some great ones but the bad ones just made it not worth it to me. The only downside to working for a company is that I’m the only designer and the projects I work on are hush hush till release so I can’t really get fresh designer eyes on what I’m working on, even out of network. I definitely agree that working for an agency when getting into it is the way to go. Having a team of other designers can expedite learning vs having to mostly learn on your own time by yourself.

  6. I have a so called steady job and after work I am freelancer. For now my marketing is just saying to my friends and colleagues what I do and what I am working on right now. I am planning to build a portfolio site – as I don't have one yet, sheeesh. Any suggestions for self-marketing and portfolio or should I just go through your videos (great work, love your channel!)

  7. Hey Ran, thank you for providing quality content all the time 🙂
I've been into UI / Landing page design since 2010 and I use WebFlow for the past three years or so, but all the projects I had done were for my own business.
My business isn't at its best these days so I'd like to freelance part-time, but I don't know how to market myself to big clients who are willing to pay accordingly to my skill set and experience.

Could you please give a bit of advice on where to start? Thanks in advance!
