My YouTube channel has been monetized for about 2 months now, and in this video I share how much money my small game dev channel makes from YouTube ads.

It’s been a while since I last made a video about my income, and at the time my YouTube channel wasn’t monetized, so I wasn’t able to cover that. I love learning how much money other YouTubers make—especially smaller channels to see what’s possible, so I figured in this video I would share how much money my small channel makes on YouTube from ads.
There’s tons of videos out there of YouTubers sharing their income, but since ad revenue can vary so wildly from niche to niche, it’s not super “applicable” information unless your channel is in the same niche as the creator you’re watching. The only other game dev YouTuber who shared his ad revenue seems to be Blackthornprod (that’s based on titles in search—his video’s was the only one mentioning YouTube revenue), so I figured I’ll add to that.
I know a lot of people would love to make a bunch of money through YouTube ads, and although it’s perfectly possible, I think it’s more difficult in the game dev & tech niches than elsewhere. I’ve noticed that comparatively few of my views are being monetized, and this seems to be the case for Blackthornprod as well. My best guess as to why this might be is that people who subscribe to game dev channels are quite likely to be more technologically savvy than the average YouTube viewer, and so many of you have ad blockers installed.

Do you make videos? What niche are you in? If you're monetized, how do your views compare to your monetized playbacks? Let me know 👇
I'm going to be doing the same thing here soon, but I'm not sure if I'm going to bother with youtube ads — I might just go the patreon route (maybe merch) — assuming I get anything popular enough for people to want to support.
I will disable ad blocker for you brooooooooooo just joking ofc not -.-
Very honest, sincere, humble and intersting. Liked it. And I don't have adblocker. Although I think you should try to attract other kinds of public: the gamers themselves. Maybe with a special playlist to make them want to play your game instead of just luearning from you. Don't get me wrong, the videos of you teaching how to do such hard tasks help me a lot and it's hard to find goog content just like yours, but you have bills to pay and you will need money eventually.
Youtube spitted out this video on me after me watching your latest Unity multiplayer Riptide series. It's wonderful to see your channel grow. And I hope things are just gonna keep getting better and better! Best of luck, Tom!
Wow is this face reveal?
deleting adblock now….
Very well laid out the structure of money involved. And a lot of useful info in general.
Thanks!
The moment you said most of you have an ad blocker and an ad showed up for an ad blocker.
i was actually wondering if ytbers earn money from premium accounts
I don't think you moved once that entire video!
Ur beautiful
i have a game development channel, but i am not monoticed
I am a small YouTuber, not yet monetized. I am making art speedpaints 🙂 thank you for sharing this information!
tom I love you
Sick bro 👏
You also probably have a much higher than typical percentage of views from desktops because of the tutorial content. I would bet even more than it being developers being tech savy and more about desktop vs mobile traffic having way more adblock on desktop than mobile.
This is really inspiring man! I'm really close to getting monetized so this helped a lot 😀
Keep up the great work, you're so close to 10k!
Great vid man
luv u tom
Nothing more certain than death and taxes.
The guilt I felt when the image went black and white… Tom.. I'm so sorry
Nice! Just want to show your page some love and support! 😀
bro your c# networking tutorial is the best but can you tell me where did you learnt it from
Make a Patreon brother
Man Excellent work!! keep doing it!
This is insane. I have the worse cpm on youtube for some reason
Great video! Super transparent, and very inspiring.
This video inspired me to turn off my adblocker on Youtube, lol. How am I going to run a channel and want to make money off of it without supporting the channels I'm watching? I didn't know about the crappy monetized view ratio for game dev content 🙁
Don't worry about money.
You do what most ppl don't do
You actually use ur smart brain + ur active and ur staying focused.
Ur future will be awesome ☺️
Start patron for support
I've been using ad guard but replaced it with AdBlock to be able to whitelist certain channels on youtube for the sake of this video
it's a cool thing also love ur content
Just for you, I watched the ad at the end.
Very interesting. I personally didn't know much about the monetization of YouTube before this. I am just making videos for fun currently anyway. But maybe some day I will get monetized and now I know a bit more about how it works! Thanks Tom!
Ts ts ts, come here, yes, ts ts, its feeding time youtube algorithm! 😂👌
Does that make a difference whether I watch the ad or skip it ?
There are probably several factors contributing to the low monetized views no?
I'm thinking that the habits of people watching computer tutorial videos are quite different to the general viewer.
For example, most people are probably watching on a computer screen meaning:
-they have quick access to skip adds with the mouse
– Are engaged with the content instead of passively watching
-They have a higher likelihood of using an AdBlock solution
I'm also wondering how the views are counted. Watching tutorials means rewatching, pausing, skipping back and forth. Maybe that has some effect?
As a youtube red subscriber, I'm also wondering to which extent it is more preferable over the regular viewer without AdBlock.
Nice breakdown! It's cool to see the metrics and what each term actually means. I didn't know about the different ad types and when you get paid. Thanks for sharing Tom!
And I don't use ad block I promise 😀
fwiw I generally watch on fire tv (no ad blocking) and almost never get shown ads for smaller channels
SMASHED THAT LIKE BUTTON!
How am I gonna get pirate legend in your game??? Lol
I turned off my AdBlock for you now.
Cause I'm a bit curious, why don't you setup a patreon account alongside koofi?
Comment for the Youtube algorithm. Hope you will get more money soon 💰💰💵💵💵💵
after watching this i went back and watched all the ads in your videos
