To help make sense of how digital design continues to change, we’re diving deep into some of the current web design trends. These popular trends helped define the look of today’s web—and while this is by no means a complete list, there’s little doubt that designers will continue creating an innovative digital experience over the next five years.
Parallax animation – This technique grew out of the multiplane camera technique used in traditional animation since the 1930s. The background images move past the camera more slowly than foreground images, creating an illusion of depth in a 2D scene of distance. Check out this example!
Full-screen video backgrounds – It gives the website a fresh, dynamic feel and conveys the message in a much elaborate fashion. Check out this example!
Using whitespace to focus attention – This technique gives “a room to breathe” for each single graphic element on the web page. Thus, elements can have their own visual focus. It is not necessarily white or empty, it can be any color, pattern, background image or even a background video – as long as it directs users’ attention to your preferred Call-to-Action (CTA). The Apple design is right on target!
Scroll animations – especially popular on storytelling websites as they help keep visitors interested in the content, so people are likely to stick around longer. This is important because visitors tend to skim through text-rich pages, often without giving the actual content the attention it deserves. And that’s where scroll-triggered animations can come in handy.
Digital interpretations of physical products – The purpose is to change how digital and physical product marketing can be successfully combined to create a unique visual experience for the viewer. This example will boggle your mind!
Captivating questionnaires – It’s a mix of question planning with visual elements and cues to make the process user-friendly and somewhat seamless.
Establishing trust with customer stories – They highlight the customer’s pain point and how a particular product or brand offered a solution. And they give consumers that trust they’re looking for.
As much as we like to predict which direction the web design industry will head next, there’s simply no way of knowing for sure. Designs from five years ago are already beginning to feel dated, and most modern websites are built using technology that simply didn’t exist until recently.
One thing we know for sure, though—web design is moving in a new and positive direction. Greater diversity, dynamic design tools and frameworks, and potent technology make change inevitable. As much as we’d like to predict where the next five years will take us, it’s truly up to you—the humble designer—to continue pushing the boundaries of the web.
Where will you take us next?
