Over the past 8 weeks, I set out to see if I could improve my running speed to the point where I could run a mile in 5 minutes.

Lots of long slow runs, Fartlek and tons of hills in 1 year you will be fine
It was clear that you couldn’t go from over 7’30” to sub 5’, you ran a 400m in 82sec, just to give you some perspective, I’m an amateur runner who runs for fun and can run a 58sec 400m and only 5’09” for the mile
6:40 mile! Takes more than 8 weeks man! Line the coach said!
I was running a 9:45 mile and my college baseball coach had a rule that the whole team all had to run a 6:15 together at once. We ran 3 timed miles everyday until we reached that mark. After 2 weeks people above 7 mins were cut from the team. After 4 weeks we finally all hit 6:15 as a team but by that time i was doing 5:30 miles. This goes to show if you push yourself past what you think is possible because your coach is driving a truck behind you screaming faster through a megaphone… anything is possible.
Bro got that forrest Gump form
Low intensity zone 2 training.
I know I’m late, like years late but if if anyone still watches this video speed, training is important but easy miles are definitely more important when he said they won’t do much for you but just make you better in shape. This was not true.
Considering I started faster than you at 7:30 and wasn't able to get down to 6:00 over the same time period despite regular training, I laughed when I heard the goal was 5:00 mins and knew exactly what was going through the running coach's head when he heard it too. I would be interested to see how long it would take you to hit 6:00 mins, which is more achievable
4:54 : while it is true that you do have to train speed to get faster, running easy mileage and building your base is the MOST important thing especially for beginners. Before incorporating speed for someone new, they first need to be able to run easy runs comfortably, and then start sprinkling in speed workouts. Remember the 80 20 rule. 80% of miles are easy, 20% are hard (speed sessions)
Why he doing it in a body warmer?
I’m four and I just wander around the track while dad runs. It usually takes me about 40 minutes before I realize I don’t know where he is or what happened to the track and another couple seconds to realize I don’t know anybody
800m to 1600m generally uses 50% anaerobic and 50% aerobic efforts. Meaning that you should be doing speedwork as well as a huge chunk of work on aerobic systems
The thing is if you already have developed your aerobic systems then you might get away with mostly speedwork. but for most average people you generally want 20% speed work and around 80% aerobic base building. Too much speed work with increase muscle size and reduce mitochondrial density. The result of this will be plenty of speed but being unable to maintain it for long enough
Dude his day one was amazing. I'm three months training and can only get it down to a 6:50.
Great piece of content!
Don't running shoes deform toes?
the first time i went under five i screamed "F%$# yeah" at the finish
Yo! I'm running a 13 min mile/3 miles a day. I can't even imagine a 5 min mile😂😂
I wear Saconys. I love them!
Also a 6 min mile is incredible
We gave it a try, def not easy! Professional Soccer Players Attempt The 5 Minute Mile https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZWYhtRge7s
Dude, I believe his final mile was 7:48, no way his first mile was that fast, more like 10-12 minutes. Fake news brah
Fake. Fake fake fake. Fake.
In high school, I remember the Presidential Fitness Challenge….ya had to run a mile in like 535 or something like that, i got really close, that was the only one out of the 8 or however many categories that i failed in but i remember i only was off by 10 seconds…..i remember running a mile in 545….but it wasn't like i was in great shape or anything, never tried to even run a mile before so how is it that its this hard for this guy……..from what people are saying running a mile in, say my time for example, 545, is really big thing….i'm 6ft 6…i was about 160 lbs back then, this was in 2004…..i wish i would have knew then that it was actually good to run a mile in that time….my PE coach was not impressed at all, he just told me i failed the mile and that was it…never thought another thing about it.
I started running because I have asthma. So far I can get a mile done in 8 minutes and 36 seconds don’t stop improving
This dude running sprints in NB 574’s is the funniest thing I’ve seen in a while😂
I'm really impressed with the progress you made! My PB mile right now is 7:27, and I'm only shaving it down by seconds per month.
Appreciated
Wow! I'm impressed! 1:18 better is terrific! Not only that, but if he had run slower initially with a steady pace throughout, I have no doubt he could have done even better!
I'm less than halfway through the video. My guess is 45 seconds to maybe a full minute better is how much I expect him to improve…
At 9:10 You say you had a 1:18 improvement. But you actually went from 7:48 -> 6:40. So that's 1:08 improvement. You could have easily gotten another 10 seconds by pacing your run though.
