How to Report Your Rent to Credit Bureaus
Rent-reporting services also help you improve credit by adding payments to your credit reports.
Many people with no credit history have a track record of paying their rent on time. However, that information does not appear on their credit reports and has no bearing on their credit ratings. Rent payments cannot be reported by you. However, rent-reporting businesses may readily update your credit reports to reflect your rent payments for a fee ranging from free (if your landlord pays) to more than $100 per year. To make the most of a rent-reporting service, you’ll need to know which credit bureaus it will report your payments to, as well as which credit scores consider those payments.
It’s also crucial to recognize that this may not be the most cost-effective way to establish credit with all three credit agencies and to be aware of your options.
DO RENT PAYMENTS AFFECT CREDIT?
If they get rent payment information, all three major credit bureaus — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — will include it in credit reports.
Credit reports then offer the information that is used to calculate your credit scores. FICO and VantageScore, the two major credit rating organizations, approach rent payment information differently:
⚫️ Rental payment information is not considered in the most widely used versions of the FICO score when generating scores.
⚫️ If you have rental information on your credit report, newer versions of FICO, such as FICO 9 and FICO 10, will take it into account.
⚫️ Rent payment information is also taken into account by VantageScore, FICO’s competitor.
WHICH SERVICES WILL REPORT YOUR RENT PAYMENTS?
There are various options for getting payment records in front of lenders. There are 2 types:
1️⃣ Services you can use independently
Your rent payments may be subject to verification by your landlord. If your landlord refuses to verify your payments, several services may be unable to record them.
Rent Reporters: There is a $94.95 one-time enrollment charge, which covers up to two years of rental payments. You can then choose between a monthly ($9.95 per month) or an annual ($7.95 per month) plan. TransUnion and Equifax receive reports from it.
BOOM: Report your rent payments for $2.00 per month. Boom reports to Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. Report ongoing payments and up to 24 months of prior payments. See your credit score impact in 10 days. Link to BOOM ➡
LevelCredit: Previously called as RentTrack, this service costs a monthly fee of $6.95 to report your rent and utility payments to Equifax and TransUnion. For a one-time price of $49.95, you can have a look back on your current lease for up to 24 months.
Rock the Score: The initial membership charge is $48, and the monthly service fee is $6.95. For up to two years of rental history, there is a $65 cost. It sends information to TransUnion and Equifax if the landlord is a property manager.
PaymentReport: For $49, Equifax and TransUnion will report your rental history for two years. Continuous reporting is free, as is adding an additional roommate or spouse. (There’s also an electronic rent payment version available through landlords.)
Piata: Renters are not charged for this service. Regardless of your landlord, it reports to at least one major credit bureau. Your rent payments can be reported to all three bureaus if your landlord signs up for a specific arrangement with Piata.
2️⃣ Services you can use if your landlord does
* ClearNow: This service debits your rent from your checking or savings account. There’s no cost to tenants, but your landlord must be signed up. If you opt-in, payments are reported to Experian via RentBureau.
* PayYourRent: Fees are typically paid by management. It reports to all three credit bureaus.
HOW TO CHOOSE A RENT-REPORTING SERVICE
First, discover if your property manager already has a relationship with a service. If not, here are some questions to ask prospective rent-reporting service providers:
* How much will a year of service cost me, including any startup fees or expenses for reporting previous rental history? (Some services allow you to go back up to 24 months.)
* How do you safeguard my personal information?
* Do you report to any of the major credit bureaus? (Ideally, all three.)
* Do you offer free credit ratings, and if yes, what score(s) do you offer?
* When can I expect to see the information on my credit report?
* How can I terminate the service?

Question: I have a business in a commercial warehouse. I want to have my landlord start reporting to the credit bureaus when I pay my rent on time so I get some credit score benefits. I have my dun and BradStreet number which is my business credit and I have my personal credit… Is there any law that says I can't report to both dun and Bradstreet for my business credit and to the other regular credit bureaus for my personal credit simultaneously for each month's rent for my business? Also, do you know of any services that will report rent to dun and bradstreet? So basically, I'd be benefiting in both personal and business credit simultaneously. I am located in the US in the state of Michigan if you needed to know.
