Fiber connections provide users with very fast, reliable internet. But, only 43% of U.S. households have access to a fiber internet connection. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that passed in November 2021 promises to bridge this digital divide, with $65 billion dedicated to expanding access to broadband internet to all Americans. Such government support, along with a number of other factors, have caused a spike in the demand for fiber products. CNBC visited Corning, the world’s largest manufacturer of optical fiber and North America’s largest producer of fiber optic cables to understand the technology behind fiber-optic internet and how the market for fiber products is changing.
Fiber-based networks make up the majority of the internet’s backbone. Fiber-optic subsea cables spanning thousands of miles connect continents together, exchanging data at nearly the speed of light. Meanwhile, the massive data centers that host all of our cloud-based applications also rely on fiber connections. Increasingly, these fiber connections are making their way directly into peoples’ homes, providing them with fast, reliable internet. But, only 43% of U.S. households have access to a fiber internet connection.
“In some instances, particularly in rural areas and very challenging geographies, it can be prohibitively expensive to to deploy fiber and it can be very expensive for households to pay for it,” says Julija Jurkevic, a senior research analyst at S&P Global Market Intelligence.

How Fiber Will Speed Up America’s Internet
2030: Sorry but optic fiber still isn't in your area.
Aka alien technology
10 years too late
Just don't mention fiber to companies like Comcast who just wired my neighborhood with old fashioned coax. There's no way they're going to sell me their service on that cable. I'm using AT&t fiber.
The biggest cost is the monthly price even after you have paid to have it run. Not till fiber drops below $50 month will the average ppl start using it! There isn’t a need unlike businesses.
I worked for a internet company like 10 years ago and I was a door to door sales, and I would talk to them about fiberoptic and they would be like get off my lawn right now, no soliciting, 10 years later my whole town from me to 80 miles all have that internet provider I'm just like wow door to door sales actually made their business successful
The FCC just changed broadband to 100 down and 25 up
Everyone should get free internet in America since it’s paid for with tax dollars anyways
Me watching with 100kb/s: 🥲
they need to actually do a real rural fiber program and get armerica online for real. they say theyre going to but they never really do it
its never available anywhere so not sure where these people are installing it?😅
I have 1Gb/s from ten years, 7$/month, and i stay on country, of course i not live in USA
I HAVE WORKED WITH THE WIRE SYSTEMS,AND THE FIBER SYSTEMS..I CAN TELL YOU ITS ALL A MONEY RACKET.FIBER IS GOOD FOR SOME THINGS AND BAD FOR OTHERS.WIRE IS MORE USER FRIENDLY AND MUCH CHEEPER MAINTANCE AND TOOL COSTS.FIBER FORCES YOU TO RETOOL AND PAY HIGHER WAGES FOR WORKERS LEADING TO MUCH HIGHER USER COSTS..FAILURES TAKE LONGER TO FIX,SO DOWNTIME IS HIGH.I LIKE BOTH,BUT ONCE THE WIRE IS GONE,THERE IS ONLY HIGHER COSTS AND ITS NOT COMMING BACK…
Wow
Hate to spill the beans but cable Internet is only bundled with TV and phone because the providers charge less for a bundle than the individual service. It’s a lie. I would’ve gladly accepted fiber 10 years ago but it’s still not in my area.
What? I'm already using fiber optics for years now and the US is just using it now? US is cringe ~ 😂😂😂
25Mb speeds ?? Most people in Denmark have access to 1Gb (both over COAX and Fiber). I have had 1Gb/1Gb for several years and pay about 30 dollars a month. But the USA is also a very large country and population is very spread. But poor guys… its like 15 years since I hade a 50Mb line
Is this video from 20 years ago? Because none of this is new.
"The shear size" ? haha, aboriginals are laughing in disguise.
Sitting here with 1000/1000 using fiber.
It makes me laught to see this when here in France, even in the smallest village you can have 2Gb symetrical since at least five years!
lol, usa does not have fiber internet in homes? hahahahahahaha
I'm from third-world country and have been using fiber-optic internet for almost 12 years now. It's super cheap here (1 Gbps = 100 USD/month, 25% off if you paid upfront for a year), with 98-99% uptime. I thought most US states had been using fiber-optic cables since early 2000.
comcast propoganda.
Musk is going to destroy you!
This video is like 50 years late lol
Max speed only 2000mb in America😅 Thats like going back to 2017😂
3:59 you CANNOT make a knot with a fiber … it will break !
