If I have to control the power to a resistance, what is the difference between a pwm+mosfet and potentiometer+mosfet? Isn't easier to use a potentiometer+mosfet?

Hi, I just built this circuit. I have a basic question: I’m using a 12V 3Ah battery as power source and my MOSFET and 555 IC are heating up a lot!! Am I doing something wrong? Is it that the battery pack has a high current output?

Why not just connect the potentiometer to the motor to adjust the motor speed? What a difference this complex circuit makes?
So, motor speed controler is like buck converter right?
Why is there no capacitor parallel to the motor to smooth out the PWM?

Is there a difference between the LM555CN and the NE555 timer? Does it work the same?
Does the AVG voltage drop with frequency or is it the time on to time off ratio? The AVG is the integration over time so the area of a fifty percent duty cycle is still the same no matter what frequency ?
