In this video we cover the how an ESC works and what the main jobs of it are inside your model. We cover the standard settings that you will encounter in traditional firmwares, things like brake, advance, voltage cut-off, direction and timing. We cover a few of the standard firmware types like SimonK and BLHeli. We talk about what OneShot is. We then finish by discussing the various types of battery Eliminator Circuits (BEC/UBEC) found in ESCs (Linear, Switching/switched, Optio/Opto).
You can see the ESC calibration video here –

Happy flying!
I connected ESC, battery, and motor. Motor not running Esc is getting very hot. What could I be doing wrong?
Thanks for your explanation. Something im still in question about is, can you ad reverse to any ESC or do you have to get a certain one?
I ordered an ESC, it came in an envelope, unpadded, with a servo I ordered. Would you just return it? I really don’t know how sensitive these items are.
I know what happens when they fail 🙁
I didn't asked for this video BUT, I am sure and so enormously happy so I can watch your virtuous knowledge, and presentation while unselfishly sharing the hard earned knowledge with the mere mortals like me, who just want to create simple things and make little triumphant ceremonies with my "electro-mechanic and machinist "tribe" haha!! (ok, its rather very small tribe, but oh well… And then as a very closest friends and then we pretend, like we are in some ""Research and Development Laboratory"", working for he latest Lockheed Martin, Microwave AESA Module bwahaha!
(oh yeah, and forget my sweet wife, for her everything is a Star Trek, you know that movie, with those two and their little light sabers !!! aaahahahaha, Oh dear Lord, I just love that kind woman…) Also thanks to you my dear friend, we can see how the very that brain/mind stuff which make to het the insight into the greatest minds ever like Tesla, Newton, Faradey and dont forget all those machinists with the 1000s and 1000s of errors on heir Lathes and Mills while I am struggling to buy cheap Copper Ingot haha!! , and not just to create but to also know the ESSENCE of why some things or rather PHYSICAL LAWAS are like that haha!!! Thank, thank you, thank you!!!!!!!! Your channel is the best, if not THEE BEST on the innerwebs for not-so-bright-visuals-learners like the little old me hahaha!!! Soryy fory the VERY, VERY LONG COMMENT MY FRIEND! MY DEAR FRIEND!
I appreciate this video. Thank you.
Is a brushless flight esc usable in a rc car with two Motors?
Like the old wild dagger from tamiya?
Because there is only brushed dual motor Controller for cars i can find.
Thanks! Your Video Post are very informative…
This is very informative and helped me A LOT ! Thank you!
Ok . The 3 wires put out 5v and one is a motor signal wire . I had the 5v+ 5volt – hooked to 5 volts to run the sinal wire hardware . Si i jys snipped them off shorter . I might make model airplanes now instead .
Great information for us newbies , thanks
Hello can you help me why my esc is getting hot and make the motor twitching like running back n fort? and we tried it often until its not beeping anymore. Please help me
Great vid cheers
Painless I asked you why my drone was losing thrust on my motors I looked into what you told me I needed to see what escs are recommended it said 18amp I have 40amps on my drone is this why my loss of thrust??
Thank you for stating that these "brushless DC motors" are actually 3-phase motors (synchronous 3-phase specifically). I'm both an RC pilot and an electrical engineer so the "DC motor" false identification has always sort of annoyed me. I speculate that half of the hobbyists don't know and care. But the other half wants to learn and understand. Giving them the accurate information reduces confusion . Thank you 👍

Hi, This question is not related to the topic, my excuses, could not find a direct way to write to you. I am looking for a video on how to program the flaps with the variable control in a Taranis X9D plus and to add the ailerons at the end of the throw. thanks for your support.
i have a boat that there is a lite on esc and beeps but the motor or servo move and the wires to motor not marked and a friend unhooked it but not sure if rhey r hooked back up right
I've got a rc plane with the controller and I can't get the motor to turn
Thank you. Great job explaining.
Hello..!
This is a great video.
I have been looking around for one solve, far as I have been able to understand BLDC motors, they will not run in forward & reverse as well on python codes (trying to build a rc car using Raspberry Pi). Is there a method i can achieve that, maybe putting another hardware or some code change, can i run them in reverse..? any help is much appreciated…!
Have a good time.. 🙂
Old RadioShack RC trucks were so durable, double the voltage… No worries, you will just strip the gears lol. Get a WPL C14 and go from 6V to 7.4.. Bang, cook the server straight away! No steering lol.
I'm using Hobbywing Eagle 20A RC, it doesn't calibrate in pixhawkcube, it's compatible, anyone know?
These esc good are they good for trucks?
You didn't mention that there are Two different BL ESC one for fling stuff and one for driving stuff on the ground and that ESC manufacturer are Assholes by selling it like that to cash more money out of the costumer
can you use a esc made for boats as a drone esc?
Can I use higher amp ESC than rated motor amps? Also, curious if we can use spare AIO 4in1 ESC's for fixed wing (single/dual motors)?
Very interesting, thanks! there is one topic I didn't clearly hear in your video: does any ESC controller works with any brushless motor?
I have question guys ..need some help!! Do brushless speed controllers allways stay connected into the receiver or just connected to calibrate then unplugged after ??
inav 4.0.0 armed.when use trottle stick up and down motor not spinning. In my fly sky trans.display trottle line 3 moving . when check motor test for calibration ,motor spinning.battery its ok.matek f 411 wse.
kto pomoze.jak nie rodacy
good lecture for beginner, like me. Thank you very much
Very good video again. Can you tell me why my 20amp esc operates fine with a 3s li-po battery but when trying to use a 3S li-ion the throttle starts to play up. Full throttle and speed then begins to fall and then motor violently pulses
I have a question pls, if I have a 20A Esc, I can supply that with a PC power supply that give me 12V and 23A?
So helpful thanks!! (:
Thanks, this was super helpful!
In this video, does the ESC has linear or switch BEC ? Thanks in advance!
very helpful. 😊🙏
watching this 2021, and still i have learned so much! your channel is worth gold! ^^
Please spread awareness about silicosis which is a fatal disease I had never heard of and worry it will destroy my life we were carpenters that built houses and in the usa have to have tie down anchors so we drilled into the concrete and cut fiber cement siding because they changed from plywood to it no one ever told us its fatal.
Great video. This discussion is still valuable today for beginning RC wannabees.
Hi Lee, I'd love to have your opinion: Just finished a new quadcopter build. I'm using Hobbywing xrotor 40A Blheli32 ESCs and 935kv brushless motors, pixhawk 2.4.8. All flashed with latest firmwares.
When testing the system, 3 of the motors seems to be ok but the 4th is just jumping back and forth not getting into smooth rotation to either direction. Any idea? Settings / esc problem / motor problem (all components are new). Thanks!
Hi do you have the ideal esc for this EDF FMS 50 mm (motor 2627 4500 KV 4S). I found out for the 4s it supports Hobbywing 50 A but the manufacturer states it has no automatic timing feature.
Hi! I just want to know if how many esc is allowed to be fitted to a 6 channel receiver if i place 5 esc for 5 motors on the esc and only 1 servo this 5 esc won’t damage the receiver? Since esc supplies 5v power to the receiver? Thanks 🙏
My ESC for an AR wing has black, red and white but schematics on Matek 405 Wing shows just 2 wires where does the third wire go?
Can I use a rc airplane esc on rc helicopter?
How much current at maximum rpm? Please help me
I absolutely love watching your knowledge and videos…I'm building a 6s plane and have a tone of room…can I run a Castle Creations Mamba X surface esc (BEC 5.5v-8v… was putting in my Kraken)…my problem is with the braking within the esc…can I just run it no reverse, no braking? I don't want to ruin a $350 plane and have it fail.
