In this video we cover the how an ESC works and what the main jobs of it are inside your model. We cover the standard settings that you will encounter in traditional firmwares, things like brake, advance, voltage cut-off, direction and timing. We cover a few of the standard firmware types like SimonK and BLHeli. We talk about what OneShot is. We then finish by discussing the various types of battery Eliminator Circuits (BEC/UBEC) found in ESCs (Linear, Switching/switched, Optio/Opto).
You can see the ESC calibration video here –

In this video you can find –
– Introduction (0:02)
– How do ESCs work? (2:29)
– Firmware types and OneShot (9:18)
– Why do we need to calibrate the throttle? (14:32)
– Types of BEC (1605)
– Summary (19:03)

  1. I didn't asked for this video BUT, I am sure and so enormously happy so I can watch your virtuous knowledge, and presentation while unselfishly sharing the hard earned knowledge with the mere mortals like me, who just want to create simple things and make little triumphant ceremonies with my "electro-mechanic and machinist "tribe" haha!! (ok, its rather very small tribe, but oh well… And then as a very closest friends and then we pretend, like we are in some ""Research and Development Laboratory"", working for he latest Lockheed Martin, Microwave AESA Module bwahaha!

(oh yeah, and forget my sweet wife, for her everything is a Star Trek, you know that movie, with those two and their little light sabers !!! aaahahahaha, Oh dear Lord, I just love that kind woman…) Also thanks to you my dear friend, we can see how the very that brain/mind stuff which make to het the insight into the greatest minds ever like Tesla, Newton, Faradey and dont forget all those machinists with the 1000s and 1000s of errors on heir Lathes and Mills while I am struggling to buy cheap Copper Ingot haha!! , and not just to create but to also know the ESSENCE of why some things or rather PHYSICAL LAWAS are like that haha!!! Thank, thank you, thank you!!!!!!!! Your channel is the best, if not THEE BEST on the innerwebs for not-so-bright-visuals-learners like the little old me hahaha!!! Soryy fory the VERY, VERY LONG COMMENT MY FRIEND! MY DEAR FRIEND!

  2. Thank you for stating that these "brushless DC motors" are actually 3-phase motors (synchronous 3-phase specifically). I'm both an RC pilot and an electrical engineer so the "DC motor" false identification has always sort of annoyed me. I speculate that half of the hobbyists don't know and care. But the other half wants to learn and understand. Giving them the accurate information reduces confusion . Thank you 👍

  3. Hello..!
    This is a great video.
I have been looking around for one solve, far as I have been able to understand BLDC motors, they will not run in forward & reverse as well on python codes (trying to build a rc car using Raspberry Pi). Is there a method i can achieve that, maybe putting another hardware or some code change, can i run them in reverse..? any help is much appreciated…!
    Have a good time.. 🙂

  4. Please spread awareness about silicosis which is a fatal disease I had never heard of and worry it will destroy my life we were carpenters that built houses and in the usa have to have tie down anchors so we drilled into the concrete and cut fiber cement siding because they changed from plywood to it no one ever told us its fatal.

  5. Hi Lee, I'd love to have your opinion: Just finished a new quadcopter build. I'm using Hobbywing xrotor 40A Blheli32 ESCs and 935kv brushless motors, pixhawk 2.4.8. All flashed with latest firmwares.
When testing the system, 3 of the motors seems to be ok but the 4th is just jumping back and forth not getting into smooth rotation to either direction. Any idea? Settings / esc problem / motor problem (all components are new). Thanks!

  6. I absolutely love watching your knowledge and videos…I'm building a 6s plane and have a tone of room…can I run a Castle Creations Mamba X surface esc (BEC 5.5v-8v… was putting in my Kraken)…my problem is with the braking within the esc…can I just run it no reverse, no braking? I don't want to ruin a $350 plane and have it fail.
