Putting in your individual stamp of identity on your YouTube page will set you apart from all other pages in your niche. Editing your channel art is one of the most successful ways to accomplish customization of your YouTube page according to your brand.’
WHAT IS YOUTUBE CHANNEL ART?
The channel art feature from YouTube allows you to customize your YouTube page according to your unique brand identity. You can totally change the look and feel of the page and the changes will carry forwards for the page display on all platforms. However, the elements might look slightly different on desktops, mobile devices, and TV screens.
CHANNEL ART DIMENSIONS
If your channel art will not save or upload properly then it is probably because the dimensions are not perfect. First, try to make sure any art you upload to YouTube is a JPEG file. The site does support PNG, but not reliably.
As to how big your art should be: banners should be 2560 x 1440 pixels, and icons should be 800 x 800 pixels. YouTube will render icons down to 98 x 98 px, but you get the best results starting with larger images. To ensure that everything runs smoothly keep your image files 2MB or less.
GETTING STARTED
Alright… let’s get started. I’m looking at a fresh new YouTube channel right now with no channel art. First I’m gonna select “edit channel art,” click on “How to create channel art,” and then under “Image size & file guidelines,” I’m gonna download the channel art templates. I’m downloading this because I want to have a visual reference as I make the layout of my channel art. Inside my download, I’m gonna set aside the png image file.
Canva.com is a bit newer than PicMonkey. On Canva you can use pre-made templates for channel art, or you can even build your own designs. You can access Canva.com from your computer, or download their iPad app.
Canva has a huge library of stock images. You can upload your own photos from your computer or social media accounts and edit them on Canva, or you could use some of the stock images which Canva provides. It is free to use Canva, but they do have premium features that cost $1 each to access.
So in Canva, I’m gonna select YouTube Channel Art as the design that I want to create. Canva’s got a ton of design options, but since I’m going to make a banner from scratch, I’m gonna click on “uploads” and upload my channel art template.
Let’s stretch the image so that it fills my entire canvas. Now I need a large background to fill the entire TV area. Ideally, you wanna bring in your own photo. But for those of you who aren’t skilled photographers, you can get some really good free high-res photos on Unsplash.com. Since I like to travel, I’m gonna use this photo of the Maldives I found there.
Now back in Canva, I’m gonna upload my image. I’m setting its transparency down so that I can still see the channel art template underneath. I like that the gazebo in this image ties everything in together so I’m gonna make sure that it makes it into the small desktop and mobile area as I stretch this image out.
Great! We now have a responsive background image, one that’ll look great on TVs, larger desktop monitors, tablets, and smaller desktop monitors and phones. But we still need some text.
Canva’s got a variety of predesigned sets of text. But since I’m designing channel art from scratch, I’m gonna add my own heading. It’s hard to know where I should position my heading, so I’m going to bring the transparency down again to see where the text and logo safe area is.
Ok… let’s add some smaller text explaining what my channel is all about. And just like that, I’m done designing my YouTube channel art!
I’ve just got to take my image out of Canva by clicking “Download” at the top right corner then go back to my YouTube Channel and upload my image.
The most complicated part is just laying out everything in all the right places. But that’s why we’ve made 50 YouTube banners just for you. So click on the link below to get your 50 free YouTube banners. Have fun with that and see you guys next time!
