Speed Index is one of the six metrics collected by Page Speed Insights that is then factored into your total score. The Speed Index is a culmination of multiple measurements as it in itself is a metric. To improve your speed index score consider loading assets in a non-render blocking fashion, and delivering a smaller payload.
Note: Page Speed Insights is out of date in terms of Lighthouse and thus future reports will see major changes in your website’s performance.
Page Speed Insights is also not used for determining page rank in Google and is not used in the new search console speed report functionality.
